Gearing Up for Grants: While you Wait

Getting Started  

Remember, Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB) revises the FOAs every year. Make sure to review the new FOA before getting started and note any changes from the previous year. If you are an Organizational Development package member, NSPN will do this for you.

Once you've read the new FOA upon release and notice differences, take a look at the tips below for additional information for completing your proposal.

Start Fresh
While it might be tempting to simply copy and paste your previous proposal and update, think again. It is best to start fresh. It's fine to use old Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) and agreements, but you want to make sure the content is fresh, your data is current, and position descriptions are the most recent.

Manage Your Time  
Don't wait until the last minute to complete your proposal or upload your application. Create a schedule and stick to it. Make sure your schedule includes time for NSPN to review your proposal.  Start collecting support letters early-on.

Practice Self Care

Many dedicated employees have a tendency to "buckle down" - so much so, they don't come up for air until their task is complete.  Don't let this happen. There are ways to prepare yourself or your colleague(s) taking on this feat.

Care about Yourself
Practicing self-care should be done at all times of your life, not just grant season. According to tinybuddha.com, "constant repetition of many tiny habits [can] soothe you and make sure you're at your optimum - emotionally, physically, and mentally.  The best way to do this is to implement tiny self-care habits every day."  Learn more ways to practice self-care at: tinybuddha.com/blog/45-simple-self-care-practices-for-a-healthy-mind-body-and-soul/

Here are some tips provided in this the article to "make sure you're at your optimum:"

Mind:

  • Start a compliments file. Document the great things people say about you to read later.
  • Take another route to work. Mixing up your routine in small ways creates new neural pathways in the brain to keep it healthy.
  • Unplug for an hour. Switch everything to airplane mode and free yourself from the constant bings of social media and email.

Body:

  • Get down and boogie. Put on your favorite upbeat record and shake your booty. For grant season, might we suggest:  https://youtu.be/GXE_n2q08Yw
  • Be still. Sit somewhere green, get fifteen minutes of sun, and be quiet for a few minutes.
  • Have a good laugh. Read a couple of comic strips that you enjoy. (For inspiration, try Calvin and Hobbes, Dilbert, or xkcd.)

Soul:

  • Help someone. Carry a bag, open a door, or pick up an extra carton of milk for a neighbor.
  • Spend time with a pet. They offer unconditional positivity and undivided attention.
  • Ask for help - big or small, but reach out.

Talk to Yourself
The website mindbodygreen.com shares "that voice inside your head has a huge impact on who you are and how you live your life."  They go on to say positive self-talk "uplifts you; it helps increase your confidence, it enables you to attract what your heart desires, it allows you to adopt a healthier lifestyle and it helps reduce stress."  Before you "buckle down," make sure you remind yourself of how awesome you are!  Believe in yourself and practice positive self-talk.  Read more about positive self-talk here: www.mindbodygreen.com/0-12637/14-mantras-to-help-you-build-positive-self-talk.html

When you start to feel overwhelmed, doubt yourself, or just want a "pick-me-up," tear off and read aloud one of your great characteristics! Feel free to share it with a colleague when you're finished.
